RESUMO

An occupational health service can be an integral part of any company. It is incumbent on the industry to conduct a thorough assessment of the need for such a service and then support the service from a financial and resource perspective. Consequently, staffing and equipping an occupational health service adequately are dependent on the services to be delivered and the type of professional staff hired. All occupational health programs can be conducted in a cost effective manner when the goals and mission are in alignment with company goals, management supports appropriate funding, and space supports the delivery of quality health care.

RESUMO

A century and a half of spirometry testing has seen the most common lung disease change from tuberculosis which reduces lung volumes to emphysema and asthma which reduce flow rates. Spirometers have evolved to highly accurate, relatively inexpensive hand-held instruments. These new spirometers use disposable flow sensors which eliminate the chance of cross-contamination and have microprocessors with programs which monitor and report the quality of the maneuvers as they are performed. Such improvements enable this highly useful diagnostic tool to be used more widely and with greater confidence.

RESUMO

First-aid preparedness was surveyed in 163 small firms employing 2,400 persons. Although 11% of the employees had received first-aid training, half of the firms lacked first-aiders. Only one-fourth of the first-aid kits were equipped according to instructions. Checking and maintenance of the equipment, as well as information about first aid at the place of work, were generally inadequate. Instructions were commonly lacking for the safe use of chemical substances. Only 9% of the firms fully complied with the requirements for optimum first-aid preparedness. Employers at small firms seem not to be sufficiently aware of their liabilities with regard to first aid. Yet, most of the faults and defects could be corrected by means of arrangements within the firms once the instructions were better known. During their visits to places of work occupational health personnel should inspect the first-aid preparedness and advise the employer on first-aid requirements. In addition the expertise of the insurance company, the local Red Cross or the regional institute of occupational health may be utilized.
